Universidad Metropolitana (UMET) of Puerto Rico reaches out to Colegio Maria Auxiliadora in Barrio Obrero.
On December 3, a meeting was held with members of America Developing Smiles de Puerto Rico (ADSPR) and the University Metropolitana (UMET) Rector Federico Matheu, PH.D., the President of the University System (SUAGM), Don Jose Mendez, and their team, Margarita Mendez and Bellisa Aquino.
The idea is to find areas of cooperation and convergence with the Maria Auxiliadora school located in Barrio Obrero. From ADSPR, Mariangel Gonzalez who is spearheading this effort, as well as Adriel Longo were present.
The University leaders offered to expand its support to Maria Auxiliadora and make available it through a variety of existing programs and resources. Thereafter, on December 12, a follow-up meeting with the Maria Auxiliadora school Principal (Sor Margarita) was held. Program ideas discussed included: providing technical training and vocational support to 10th, 11th , and 12th graders; providing internship trainings for UMET’s students at Maria Auxiliadora; improving the school accounting and administrative systems; grant writing support and guidance to obtaining federal dollars for building a preschool on neighboring premises, as well as others.
From Maria Auxiliadora Sor Margarita, Principal; Sor Consuelo, School President; and Sor Julia, School Administrator, were present. From the UMET the following attended: Federico M. Matheu, PH.D.- Rector; Belissa M. Aquino Soto, VR Aux. Desarrollo Institucional; Javier Saracho, Director Instituto de Educación Ambiental (INEDA); Margarita E. Méndez, VP Asoc. Desarrollo & Exalumnos and SUAGM, Lcdo. Eduardo Quijano, Director Centro Servicios Comunitarios. From ADSPR, Mariangel Gonzalez, Isis Longo, Manolo Fernandez and Adriel Longo were present.
An action plan will be drafted, as soon as the January 2009. “We are delighted throughout ADS and our efforts to be a part of this important milestone for all the institutions involved, and most importantly, to contribute to the education and wellbeing of so many children and young adults as well as to the preservation of these institutions”, said Mariangel Gonzalez.

El 3 de diciembre, se efectuó una reunion entre America Developing Smiles de Puerto Rico (ADSPR) y el Rector de la Universidad Metropolitana (UMET), Federico Matheu, el Presidente del sistema Universitario Ana G. Méndez (SUAGM), Don José Mendez, y parte de su equipo ejecutivo, Margarita Méndez y Bellisa Aquino. La idea fundamental es buscar áreas de apoyo y convergencia con el colegio Maria Auxiliadora en Barro Obrero. De ADSPR estuvieron presentes, Mariangel Gonzaleaz, dirigiendo esta iniciativa y Adriel Longo.
La universidad, ofrece expander su apoyo a Maria Auxiliadroa a traves de una serie de programas ya existentes y poner a la orden sus recursos. Posteriormente, el día 12 de diciembre, se efectuó una reunión de seguimiento con la Principal del colegio María Auxiliadora, Sor Margarita. De Maria Auxiliadora asistieron: Sor Margarita, Principal; Sor Consuelo, Presidenta; y Sor Julia, Administradora. De la UMET los siguientes atendieron: Federico M. Matheu, PH.D.- Rector; Belissa M. Ideas discutidas incluyeron proveer entrenamiento técnico y vocacional a estudiantes de 10mo, 11vo y 12vo grados; proveer de pasantías en el colegio (‘interships’) a estudiantes de la universidad; ayudar a mejorar el sistema de contabilidad y administración; proveer de apoyo en desarrollar propuestas (grants) para obtener fondos federales para la construcción de un maternal vecino a la localidad del colegio, entre otras.
Se presentará un plan de acción en Enero 2009. “Estamos felices de ser parte de este gran hito histórico para las tres instituciones involucradas pero sobre todo, de seguir ayudando a la educación y bienestar de tantos niños y jóvenes y de ser paríicipes del desarrollo y preservación de estas instituciones”, comentó Mariangel Gonzalez
